Personal Kiatsu®

Living energy, or Ki, flows strongly in a healthy body. The flow of Ki is weaker in a body that is ill, injured, or overtired.

We use Kiatsu® to restore a vigorous flow of Ki and activate the body’s natural healing processes.

What is Kiatsu®?

Kiatsu® is energy touch that stimulates the body’s natural healing. Kiatsu® is energizing and natural.

Kiatsu® stimulates the flow of Ki, which is living energy. When Ki flows freely, tension evaporates, inflammation decreases, and the body’s natural healing occurs faster. Kiatsu® can have an especially positive effect on new injuries, and also the brain, as documented in our published study: The Beneficial Effects of Kiatsu.

We begin by calming the mind so that Ki flows freely. Then we place our hands on our partner gently. As Ki flows, after a short time, the body’s healing processes become activated. As we proceed, there is no need to massage the tissue. Simply maintain contact with the hands and continue to concentrate on the flow of Ki.

What Happens in a Kiatsu® Class?

We begin with gentle, invigorating movements that loosen up all of our joints and promote good posture. We practice mind-body activities that help us develop calm focus and allow Ki to flow freely.

We perform simple activities with a partner to learn how to use the natural power of Ki. Then, we practice Kiatsu® (touch with living energy) with a partner to stimulate the body’s natural healing. Kiatsu® is always helpful and relaxing for both people.

Because of the small class size, you will get plenty of hands-on assistance from the instructor. Classes generally last 1.5 to 2 hours.

Prevent your migraines and headaches

“ Thank you Sensei!  I feel so much better!”

Unusual words to hear in a martial arts, dojo, but common words to hear in the unique Dojo, the Personal Kiatsu® School dojo of the Oregon Ki Society.  Even more unique, the benefits of the training to prevent migraine and headaches has been scientifically studied and proven to work, with published research showing over 50% reduction in migraine headaches.

The authors of the research, Calvin Tabata, an eighth-degree black belt in the martial art of Ki– Aikido who teaches worldwide, and Terry Copperman md., a family doctor with 45 years of family medicine practice and 45 years of training in Ki-Aikido under Tabata Sensei, teamed up to research the benefits of Kiatsu® and published their research in 2021 with the assistance of Dr. Philip Copenhaver and Dr. Shirley McCarthy of the Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU).

How does it work? Dr. Copperman explains:   “ 80% of migraines and probably 95% of common headaches are caused by stress and poor posture. We teach our migraine students to relax and help them to improve their posture, then use light pressure and send energy through our hands to relax their neck and shoulders and upper back where stress has accumulated. Within 4 to 8 weeks the students who practice are able to stay much more relaxed at work and home and don’t absorb so much stress.”

Kiatsu® (pressing with Ki) was originally developed by the hundred martial arts master Koichi Tohei, the founder of Ki-Aikido, to use Ki to improve health.  Tabata Sensei studied for many years under master Tohei and in 1974 started the Oregon Ki Society, and all volunteer nonprofit organization to teach the principles and training in Oregon.

The organization has Dojo‘s in Northeast Portland, Tigard (where the Kiatsu® School is located), Hillsboro, West Linn, corvallis, Eugene, and Bend, offering fun and stimulating classes for children and adults.

Dr. Copperman recently retired from his family medicine clinic in Eugene, and is now volunteering his time teaching classes for prevention of migraine and common headaches, both in Eugene and in Portland.
