Our History

Founder – Koichi Tohei (1920 – 2011):

Koichi Tohei, the founder of the Ki Society, dedicated his life to developing Ki Training, Kiatsu®, and Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido. His exceptional teaching and mastery of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido inspired students worldwide for over 60 years.

President – Shinichi Tohei (1973 – ):

Shinichi Tohei, son and lifelong student of Koichi Tohei, leads the Ki Society as president and chief instructor. Under his leadership, the Ki Society has expanded to over 400 dojos in Japan and branches in 24 countries.

The Oregon Ki Society:

Founded by Calvin Tabata, a direct student of Koichi Tohei, the Oregon Ki Society, established in 1974, offers dedicated training facilities across Oregon. Satellite programs extend the reach to community centers, schools, and universities. There is a large headquarters facility in Tigard, OR for regional training camps, Kiatsu school, instructor training, and other events.

The Eugene Dojo:

In 1978, John Gilmore started the Eugene Dojo, inspired by his training with Tohei Sensei in Japan. Over the years, leadership evolved, with Terry Copperman assuming a pivotal role. With dedication, the dojo grew and now has a permanent school, thanks to the support of its members.

With guidance from Master Koichi Tohei and Calvin Tabata Sensei, we’re committed to continuing our legacy of teaching and training in Eugene.
